Title:

[Ruth L. Annis photograph albums of life and travels in China, Japan and elsewhere]

Creator/Contributor:

Annis, Ruth L., creator, photographer.

Abstract:

Chiefly snapshots documenting the everyday life and travels of Ruth L. Annis, a privileged San Francisco woman who lived in and visited various locations in Japan and China during the 1920s and early 1930s. Both albums depict Annis' many friends, fellow American travelers and possible expatriates, and other associates; their numerous leisurely pursuits; and closely observed scenes of everyday life in Japan and China, including local inhabitants; street scenes and public events; natural and urban scenery; and temples, palaces, historical buildings and other examples of distinct regional architecture. Volume 1, whose contents are presented chronologically, chiefly documents Annis' travels from 1919, when she sailed from San Francisco to Japan in May, through her 1921 travels in China. Locations depicted in Vol. 1 include Honolulu, Yokohama (where Annis worked for some time), Tokyo, Kamakura, Mt. Fuji, Nigishi, Aburatsubo, Myonishita, Shanghai (another work location of Annis), Ningpo, Pootoo (now Potuo Island), Zahkou, and Hengchow. Volume 2, the contents of which are not ordered chronologically, ranges from 1919 to 1935 and documents further travels in Asia and elsewhere, and local leisure activities in California. Locations depicted in Vol. 2 include China, with many views of the presence of international troops sent in defense of Shanghai at the beginning what Annis refers to as "the Cantonese revolution of 1927", as well as other locations in the country (Peking, the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, Hong Kong, Kowloon, Canton and Kuling); Manila and an Igorot village in the Philippines; Honolulu and other locations on Oahu (Mormon Temple, Kailua); Vladivostok; Yokohama, with many views taken during the aftermath of the city's destruction by the great Kanto earthquake of 1923; Alaska in 1928 (Ketchikan, Sitka, glaciers, Juneau, Petersburg); Samoa in 1935; and several California locations, including Inverness, San Francisco, Berkeley, Russian River, Santa Cruz and Capitola.
